Cranial osteopathy
FOR BABIES AND CHILDREN

Osteopathy has been used to treat babies and children for several decades. From new-born babies to toddlers and teenagers, the unique character of the treatment finds ways of being helpful for all. Using extremely gentle touch, I allow the body’s own self-corrective abilities and its natural elasticity to restore the health of the child, which provides the possibility for their symptoms to be ameliorated.

There are many reasons why parents bring their children, but principally it is because they sense something is wrong. They often bring babies for a check-up after birth, or if they are distressed, with physical and emotional issues unresolved from their birth or their position in the womb; toddlers that may only just be beginning to show the strains from their birth experience or may have had an accident or head injury, and teenagers who are starting to get headaches or migraines or are feeling the strains of changing hormones, school pressure or family discord. There are many other reasons why children come, and I am always happy to discuss the possibilities of Osteopathic treatment for a child.

If children are unable to lie down, or even keep still, I still find a way to work. I aim to make the child feel as safe as possible and the experience enjoyable. It is important that the child does not feel coerced or that ‘they have to be fixed’.

Usually it is a relaxing experience for parent and child, though sometimes there is a release of energy after treatment and the child can be quite active. Babies can occasionally be restless following treatment, but most parents report helpful changes within a week.

If your baby or child appears in discomfort, and it is difficult to work out the cause, in many cases just a single treatment and alleviate symptoms dramatically.

It is recommended by osteopaths that all babies benefit from a routine check-up after birth.

The most common difficulties in the first few months are to do with feeding, sleeping and crying. As the child grows there are many different problems which are contributed to by unresolved birth strains including vulnerability to infections, headache and backache, sleep, behavioural and learning issues. Discomfort or sleep disturbance often occur around the time of developmental milestones. Osteopathic treatment often clears the way for the milestone to be reached as well as alleviating the discomfort and enabling better sleep.

Vicki
Mother of twins

Ben is a skilled and intuitive osteopath with a sensitive approach to his clients and a focussed approach to his work. I am amazed at how much he can perceive through his light touch treatment and how effective the results can be.

Vicki
Mother of twins

My twins were born naturally, the first with venteuse and the second with forceps.  Cranial osteopathy was recommended to relieve any pressure the girls had experienced from the lengthy labour and birth.  The results were incredible, two results most markedly.  The first was within six weeks of their birth.  Asha has been struggling to breast feed and after a single treatment she was able to widen her jaw making breast feeding much easier for her and more comfortable for me.

The second most impressive result was the release of tension in her legs after she was a year old.  As the second twin she was in the womb longer than Sophia and she experienced not only her own birth but Sophia’s birth too.  I imagine during Sophia’s birth she felt squashed by the contractions with no passage out as that was blocked by her sister.  Prior to Ben’s treatment she wouldn’t allow anything to cover her legs, blankets, cushions etc. resulting in more than the usual sleepless nights, especially when it was cold.  She also didn’t like being tickled and was very insistent about me firmly rubbing her legs before she went to sleep, directing my hands to where the pressure was required.  After three of Ben’s treatments she was not only ticklish, but pulling the duvet over herself before she went to sleep and she was also significantly less insistent on me rubbing her legs.

Ben is a skilled and intuitive osteopath with a sensitive approach to his clients and a focussed approach to his work.  I am amazed at how much he can perceive through his light touch treatment and how effective the results can be.  Asha now tells me when she wants to see Ben because she has ‘hurt legs or feet’.

Emily
First-time mother

I have taken Ellie for two courses of treatment with Ben since she was born. At 4 months, she was suffering from what appeared to be digestion pain and cried a lot. Ben linked this back to when she had to have a stomach pump just after birth as well as what he explained are common birth stresses. Later, a combination of factors including early walking, a spinal tap and a head injury led to her complaining about discomfort in her feet and legs, expressed particularly by writhing about at night. At 16 months, I took Ellie back to see Ben and through gentle treatment, he has made her much more comfortable and relaxed, and her night episodes have cleared up.

Katie
Mother of two children helped by Ben

Ben is an absolute ‘must have’ in my contact list and I recommend him without hesitation. He helped my eldest daughter, aged 7, who suffered with fluid in her ears – she couldn’t hear us talking at a normal volume whilst standing right behind her. After 6 sessions with Ben the fluid had completely drained without the need for surgery to have grommets fitted. She subsequently passed a perfect hearing test at the RBH. Two years on her ears are still absolutely fine. My youngest daughter started losing her hair in March 2020, aged 4. Within a few weeks she had a 6cm diameter circular bald patch on her scalp. We applied steroid cream for 2 months but the bald patch just kept growing. I asked Ben to help and after just 2 sessions I could see tiny hair growth. About 10 sessions later Ben finished her treatment. By then she had strong hair growth covering the whole area and it is still growing strong now. I can’t recommend Ben highly enough. He is highly experienced, exceptional yet understated, thorough and professional. He maintains strict Covid compliant cleanliness standards and won’t continue treatment any longer than is necessary.

Tony
Father

Having tried various things we were at a loss as to how we could relieve our son’s hearing and breathing problems with sleepless nights. We called Ben and after a very friendly and informal consultation suggested a course of action on which we agreed. The course was a success in bringing our son’s hearing back to normal levels and allowing him to breathe again through his nose after two years of suffering. It also meant he didn’t have to have surgery and got the all clear by the hospital. It was a great relief to our 5-year old, and a lot less sleepless nights for us. We would happily recommend this drug-free remedy to other parents whose children are suffering from ENT related problems.

Amanda
Mother

Both my children have had cranial osteopathy sessions with Ben Colyer.  My son was treated at around 18 months for persistant night waking and crying, as we suspected from his behavior he was uncomfortable in some way.  My daughter was treated at 6 weeks old as she was a fretful baby, paritcularly in the evenings and was very difficult to settle. His quiet and patient approach put the children at ease and a significant improvement was noted in both cases.  I would have no hesitation in recommending Ben.
